The demo data mistake
that ruins your Odoo forever.
You just set up Odoo. You click somewhere and suddenly your database is flooded with 500 fake products, 100 fake customers, and 1000 fake orders. You click delete. Nothing happens. You can't delete any of it. You're stuck with it forever. This is the biggest beginner mistake — and once you make it, there's no coming back.
What is this demo data?
When you first create an Odoo database, you have an option to load demo data. It's meant to be a sample that shows you how Odoo works — like a tutorial database.
The problem is: once you load it into your real business database, you can't remove it. Ever.
"I thought demo data was temporary. Like a test mode. I clicked 'Yes' to load it because I wanted to see how customers work. Now my database has 500 random fake products mixed in with my real inventory. Customers are confused. My reports are useless. My accountant thought I was running 50 orders a day when I was actually running 5. I've spent two months manually deleting entries. I wish someone just told me NOT to click that button."
Why can't you just delete it?
Good question. The answer is: Odoo won't let you.
The demo data is baked into your database at the deepest level. It's not just a folder you can empty. Every fake customer, fake product, and fake order is connected to invoices, payments, stock levels, and historical records. If Odoo let you delete it all at once, your entire database could break.
So Odoo makes it impossible to delete in bulk. You have to delete manually, one entry at a time. And if you're unlucky enough to have thousands of demo entries mixed with real data? You could be deleting for months.

Not just the time to delete the demo data. The time dealing with the confusion it caused. Customer reports showing fake orders. Inventory that doesn't match reality. Accountants asking "Wait, how many real customers do you have?" The problem compounds.
When does this actually happen?
The demo data option appears in exactly one place — right at the beginning when you're creating your first database.
Most people don't read the screen carefully. It says something like "Demo data (for testing)" and you're clicking through setup steps fast because you want to get to work. You miss it. You click "Yes." Done.
Then you log in. Your Odoo database looks FULL of data. You think "Oh, this must be normal." You start working. And then, weeks later, you realize none of this data is yours.
The one rule: When creating a new Odoo database, always select "No" to demo data — unless you are literally just testing and will throw the database away. Not even "maybe later." Just "No."

What if you already made this mistake?
If you've already loaded demo data — I have bad news and worse news.
Bad news: You can't delete it all at once.
Worse news: Your best real solution is to create a new, fresh database and manually migrate your actual data over. Yes, this is painful. But it's faster than deleting thousands of fake entries one by one.
The right way to start Odoo
Here's the checklist for setting up Odoo the first time, without mistakes:
