Odoo keeps logging
me out — why and the fix.

You login to Odoo. You work for 10 minutes. Suddenly you're logged out. You refresh. Logged out again. This happens repeatedly. It's maddening. But it's also super easy to fix — usually in under one minute. Here's what's actually happening and exactly how to stop it forever.

Why does Odoo keep kicking you out?

Odoo isn't randomly trying to annoy you. There's a reason you're getting logged out. The good news? It's never because Odoo is broken. It's always one of these specific things:

Real person — Marcus, 31, retail shop owner, London

"I thought my Odoo account was hacked. I was getting logged out every 15 minutes. I changed my password three times. Still happening. Turns out my browser had cleared my cookies and Odoo couldn't keep me logged in. One simple setting change and it stopped. I felt silly, but also relieved."

The 4 reasons this happens

1
Most Common

Your browser is deleting cookies automatically

Odoo stays logged in by storing a "cookie" in your browser. This cookie is basically a tiny file that says "this person is logged in." If your browser is set to delete cookies when you close it — Odoo logs you out immediately.

The fix: Go to your browser settings and tell it to keep cookies. Most browsers have a setting like "Delete cookies on exit" or "Clear site data." Turn it off or add Odoo to the exceptions list.

Chrome: Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data → Uncheck "Cookies and other site data" OR add your Odoo URL to "Sites that can always use cookies"

Firefox: Settings → Privacy → Cookies and Site Data → Change to "Allow" instead of "Delete"

Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Uncheck "Block all cookies" and add Odoo to exceptions

2
Session Timeout

Your admin set the session timeout too short

Every Odoo database has a "session timeout" setting. This is how long you can be inactive before Odoo logs you out for security. The default is usually 8 hours of inactivity. But if your admin (or someone setting up Odoo) set this to 15 minutes or 30 minutes — you'll get kicked out constantly.

The fix: Ask your Odoo admin to increase the session timeout. If YOU'RE the admin, here's how:

Settings → General Settings → Session Timeout (in seconds) → Change to 28800 (that's 8 hours)

Or if you want longer: 86400 = 24 hours.

3
Multiple Tabs Open

You have Odoo open in multiple browser tabs

This is annoying but true: if you open Odoo in tab 1 and tab 2, and you do something in tab 1, tab 2 might log you out. Odoo gets confused about which session is "active." Especially if the tabs have different URLs (like one is odoo.com and one is your-company.odoo.com).

The fix: Simple — only keep Odoo open in ONE tab. Close all other Odoo tabs. Work in just that one tab. If you need multiple windows, use a completely separate browser (Firefox + Chrome) instead of multiple tabs.

4
Browser Cache Issue

Your browser cache is corrupted or outdated

Sometimes your browser stores old cached data from Odoo. When you login, the new session conflicts with the old cached data. Odoo gets confused and logs you out to protect your security.

The fix: Clear your browser cache and cookies for Odoo specifically.

Chrome: Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete (or Cmd+Shift+Delete on Mac) → Select "All time" → Check "Cookies and other site data" + "Cached images and files" → Click "Clear data"

Firefox: Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete → Select "Everything" → Make sure both "Cookies" and "Cache" are checked → Clear

Then close and reopen your browser completely. Login to Odoo fresh.

The super-fast fix (try this first)

If you need to fix this right now, do this:

Quick fix checklist
Step 1: Close ALL browser tabs with Odoo open
Step 2: Close the browser completely (not just the tabs)
Step 3: Clear your browser cookies (Ctrl+Shift+Delete, select "All time", check "Cookies", click "Clear")
Step 4: Reopen your browser and login to Odoo fresh
Step 5: Keep only ONE tab open. Don't open Odoo in multiple tabs.

This fixes it 95% of the time. The remaining 5% is usually the session timeout being too short (fix #2). If you're still getting logged out after this, ask your admin to increase the session timeout.

How to prevent this permanently

Once you've fixed it, keep it fixed:

Prevention steps
Only one tab: Keep Odoo in just one browser tab at a time
Cookies enabled: Make sure your browser isn't deleting cookies on exit
Session timeout: Ask your admin to set it to at least 8 hours (28800 seconds)
Don't use VPN while testing: VPNs can sometimes mess with cookies. Disable it while you test the fix.
Real person — Priya, 26, operations manager, India

"Took me forever to realize I had Odoo open in 5 different tabs. I was working on customer orders in one tab, then jumping to inventory in another tab, then back to sales. Odoo was literally getting confused by having 5 active sessions from the same computer. Closed 4 tabs, kept only one active, and the problem completely went away. So obvious once I figured it out."

Still getting logged out?

If you've tried all of this and you're STILL getting logged out, there are two possibilities:

Possibility 1: Your Odoo instance has a very short session timeout set by the admin. Session settings control how long you can be inactive. Ask your admin to check: Settings → General Settings → Session Timeout. It should be 28800 (8 hours) or higher, not 900 or 1800 (15-30 minutes).

Possibility 2: There's a network or server issue on Odoo's end. Contact Odoo support and tell them you're getting logged out constantly. They can check server logs to see what's happening.
